The successful applicant will join Professor Frisoni's laboratory to work on several projects focused on the interaction between gut microbiota and dementia, specifically Alzheimer's disease. The role involves analyzing data from a local large clinical cohort study comprising over 1,000 individuals. The objective is to identify the impact of the human microbiota on the onset and progression of Alzheimer's disease. This project includes extensive data sets such as microbiota metagenomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics from various sample types, alongside comprehensive clinical characterizations, including diagnoses, biomarkers, PET-scans, MRIs and a wide array of neuropsychological tests.
Skills / profile required:
The candidate must have PHD in bioinformtic, a strong competence in bioinformatic analysis and possess the following skills:
Application of modern biostatistics and machine learning methods to high-throughput molecular data; analysis, integration and visualization of different types of omics data, including genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics;
Several years of experience in the contextualization of results from multi-omics experiments, including correlation with clinical variables and biomarkers, pathway- and network- level analyses, stratification of the population by molecular subtyping;
Good personal communication skills to work and interact with biologists, clinicians, and data scientists;
Demonstrated experience with the application of supervised and unsupervised machine learning methods to biomedical data;
Specific demonstrated experience in analyzing microbiome data (both 16S rRNA gene and shot-gun sequencing);
Excellent skills in data analysis, data visualization and statistical programming in R and Python;
Prior knowledge on Bayesian modelling to link gut brain axis is required;
Familiarity with Linux/Unix command line and high-performance computing environments;
Large scale brain MRI data analysis will be considered a plus;
Proficiency with the English language of C1 or higher;
Present results at national and international events/conferences if requested by the hierarchy;
Contribute to the publication of scientific articles in international journals;
Prepare additional grant applications as needed ;
Contribute to the supervision of interns and students.
The research and teaching fellow will be expected to play a leading role in the ambitious research project to which they will be assigned.
They will be expected to carry out their work while collaborating effectively with the team and to demonstrate their skills in carrying out bioinformatics analyses in collaboration with colleagues in the laboratory. They should also be able to communicate effectively with the various internal and external partners, both orally and in writing, to present the results obtained to the scientific community.
